Handling Credit Card Fraud

Credit card fraud is a more common crime in these days of continuous electronic transactions. You do have rights as a consumer, especially if the agency is not based in the United States. However, as with any credit card discrepancies, you will need to be vigilant.

The best way to prevent damage to your credit report by means of credit card fraud is to check your monthly statement regularly. Most credit cards will allow you to look at your daily statement activity online, so take advantage of this as soon as you give your credit card number to a dating agency or marriage agency. In most cases, they are reputable, but they should not charge you for anything without asking you first and getting your permission.

If you do notice that there is an error or an extra charge on your credit card statement, then you do not need to assume that you have been the victim of credit card fraud. You will first check with the person/agency that has charged you to see why you were assessed a fee that you do not recognize. If it is something that you never agreed to, you should request that it be removed. If the company is legitimate, you will be able to see a credit on your next statement. If you do not, then call and ask again; this time, send a certified letter with the request in writing. If nothing happens again, then you should fill out a police report and report the action to the credit card company. At that point, you may want to cancel your credit card to avoid getting charged any more.
